The unquestionable rise in the standard of Spanish Optometry has impelled the Spanish General Council of the Colleges of Opticians-Optometrists to start one of the most important and most exciting projects since its creation in 1964.

After organizing the International Conference on Optometry, Contac lenses and Ophthalmic Optics, which will next year 2010 will reach its 21th edition, as well as several postgraduate courses, collaborating very closely with the 11 Universities that include Optometry in their academic program, and editing a professional magazine with relevant information for the 15,000 registered graduate Optometrists that we have in Spain at present, we still had a challenge (not an easy one) to face up to: editing an indexed journal. In this, its first issue the readership will be able to verify for themselves the scientific rigor of the project.

This project, the edition of the Journal of Optometry Peer-reviewed Journal of the Spanish General Council of the Colleges of Opticians-Optometrists, produced entirely in English, has a unique feature of including the translation into Spanish of every abstract to facilitate its diffusion into the Spanish-speaking scientific community. Furthermore, to ensure that the journal attains and maintains the desired level of competence, the journal has established a fruitful collaboration with many important figures from the international scientific field.

Just by looking at the composition of the Editorial Board one gets a good idea of its importance and of the support given to the Journal of Optometry by each of the leading countries in this area of research.

To all of them, the Editor-in-Chief, the Associate Editor-in-Chief and the Executive Board, want to show our gratitude and our pride in the “birth” of this new scientific journal. We hope that it will soon be included and indexed in Medline International Database and that, from then on, it will follow a path to success similar to that followed by the most respected and important journals worldwide that focus on research in optometry.

We hope that both its online version as well as its printed version will be given a warm welcome, and that this journal will help to enhance and promote research in this field, becoming a vehicle for spreading scientific knowledge worldwide.
