Clinical Procedures in Primary Eye Care is one of those books that most optometrists have used at some point during their training or early in their practice, becoming a frequent acquisition as a clinical practice manual for reference and/or review. This fifth edition comes as a detailed update, again carefully written, well-organised, using a simple step-by-step approach to the most common clinical procedures used in primary eye care, and is designed for use by all in optometry practice. Conceived as a book for students, it is very useful to both trainee and qualified clinicians alike. The rationale provided makes it easy for the reader to understand why things have to be carried out in a certain way.

The style of writing makes for a very comprehensive and informative description of each technique, with a focus on evidence-based Optometry, but also giving practical advice, clinical tips to overcome difficulties or limitations within the procedures, as well as common errors.

This new edition covers important areas that have experienced considerable change in the last few years, such as technical developments like OCT, the latest guidelines on dry eye, scleral lenses or the pandemic in myopia. It must be bore in mind however, that this is not a specialty book, and therefore those aspects are not fully covered in detail.

The book is split into nine chapters covering evidence-based optometry, communication skills, oculo-visual systems (grouping tests in terms of the system they assess), variations in appearance of the normal eye, and physical examination procedures.

The online version is easy to navigate through, loaded with a significant increase in the number of images available, and also providing access to 106 online videos on various aspects of the optometric procedures explained. There are nine contributors for the chapters and ten additional contributors to the electronic ancillary.

The result is a useful reference guide that covers virtually every procedure that a primary eye care provider is likely to need in daily practice.
